Top Kitchen & Bath Trends

Talking about trends always invites a strong reaction from people. There are some who hate the very idea of following trends, while others live and die by them. While I never plan my renovations according to what’s trendy (it’s not a good idea when it comes to ROI), it’s always interesting to see what’s popular and what people are currently interested in. After all, there are some trends that disappear as quickly as they came, but there are others that end up lasting the test of time.

Here are some of the top kitchen and bath trends I expect to see in the coming year. What are your thoughts – are these trends here to stay?

Kitchen Trends
Neutral Colors – Good news for everyone who likes light, neutral kitchens. Now not only are they great for ROI, but they’re also right on trend. White kitchens are still at the top of the list, but other soft neutrals such as grey, cream and beige will be popular this year. I know a lot of people complain about not seeing enough color in kitchens, but if you’re into bold or bright colors use them for elements like lighting, window treatments and accessories. There’s no reason why you can’t have a colourful kitchen while still having neutral cabinets, tile and paint colors
Open Shelving – Love it or hate it, open shelving isn’t going anywhere yet. It’s practical for a couple of reasons: it can fit into awkward spaces more easily than traditional cabinets, and it’s significantly less expensive. The most common argument I hear against it is that dishes can get dirty or collect dust, but when dishes are in regular use the amount of dust that collects is really minimal.
Smart Design – With more people using their smartphones and tablets in the kitchen it’s going to be more important than ever to have built-in charging stations and storage for devices. Gone are the days of looking up recipes in cookbooks. If you want to look up a recipe you need to be able to pull out your fully charged tablet and have a spot to prop it up (or hang it) while you cook. If you’re planning a kitchen renovation this year make sure to incorporate charging stations and device storage

Why You Should Be Putting Lemonade In Your Coffee

As cooling caffeine-delivery systems go, your standard issue cold brew is pretty hard to beat. Hard... but, it turns out, not impossible. The evidence? Consider the Thunderbolt, an icy, tart, insanely refreshing drink that’s just a simple combo of espresso and lemonade. (And which I’ll be drinking every afternoon from now until November.)
I first encountered the Thunderbolt two years ago at Smith Canteen, a cafe in my Brooklyn neighborhood, and was immediately hooked. Since then, I’ve discovered that the formula, though inspired, is not wholly original—and actually has a devoted following among coffee geeks everywhere from Sweden to Mexico.

The best part about this new breed of icy beverage? It really couldn’t be easier to make at home—no fancy gear required. Just grab yourself a glass, fill it with ice, and combine lemonade with a shot or two of chilled espresso or cold brew concentrate. Store-bought lemonade is fine (I’m partial to Newman’s Own) as long as it’s not too sweet.

Or, if you really want to play around, try swapping out the still stuff for some sparkling lemonade instead. Indeed, while its origins are hard to pin down, with its tart, citrusy edge, the Thunderbolt does have a lot in common with the espresso tonic, another (seemingly Swedish-derived) coffee trend that’s been the darling of craft coffee shops for a few summers now. (For the uninitiated, it is exactly what it sounds like: a glass of tonic water over ice, topped with a shot of espresso.)

Coffee and soda hybrids of all stripes might just be the “it” drinks of the summer. During a recent swing through Charleston, SC, I stopped in at the Daily and sat in the sun sipping a delightful combination of grapefruit soda and espresso, garnished with a twist of orange peel. At Cocoa Cinnamon in Durham, NC, you can order a dark and sweet Kokytu, which consists of an espresso over an iced cane sugar Mexican Coke. And, at the new Stumptown cafe in New Orleans’ Ace Hotel, they’re serving the “Endless Summer,” a julep-inspired concoction made from cold brew laced with mint simple syrup and sparkling water.

But why stop there? We’re already dreaming of an amped-up espresso Dark and Stormy and a cherry cola cold brew.

5 Easy And Clever DIYs You’ll Actually Want To Try

Dress up one of those typical blue and white coolers with the help of a few basic craft supplies.
All of your friends will ask where you got it. Assuming you go for the contact paper on top, make sure you measure, measure, and measure again before you cut. And if you intend to put this cooler to pretty heavy use (I mean, who doesn’t), then make sure you don’t skip the acrylic coat, $6.61.
Hot glue rope around a basket, box, tub, or whatever to make a pretty basket.
You can use anything for your form, because you’re going to pull the form out at the end. Make sure to pick a cord that is going to be stiff enough to stand up on it’s own without the form in the middle of it

Convert empty liquor bottles into homemade tiki torches to light up your outdoor evenings.
As long as you get the materials that the tutorial suggests, this one’s pretty hard to mess up! And you can use whatever glass bottles you like, even if they’re not liquor bottles. (Just make sure they are glass, so they aren’t flammable or meltable.)

Fake pre-war charm by using grosgrain ribbon as faux molding on your walls
This project will probably take up most of your Sunday, but if it’s your taste, it’s so worth it. A few pointers to make sure it comes out nicely: make sure you have enough ribbon and supplies, make sure you “measure twice, cut once”, and don’t forget to use a level to make sure your ribbons are straight.
Transform a $3 placemat into a clutch worthy of a designer boutique.
It takes a few hand stitches, but nothing fancier than a simple elementary school project. When you’re picking your placemat, make sure you find something that’s woven and structured (like the one in the photo), because that will make the sewing more like weaving, and make it look like an actual clutch.

Technology has seen such an incredible amount of advancement that what used to be bulky can now be miniscule in size. While these advancements have benefited some of the products we use every day, they have also threatened our personal privacy.

Police are warning people to use extra caution if they spot a suspicious looking coat hook. While coat hooks are incredibly common in bathrooms, hotels, and houses, detectives have discovered that hundreds have been harbouring a terrifying secret.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office posted to their Facebook page, ‘Detectives in the Upper Keys are investigating three reports involving hidden cameras found in women’s restrooms. In all three incidents, miniature cameras hidden in coat hooks were found mounted on walls in the women’s restrooms. They were found at Anne’s Beach on May 26th, the Circle K Store at the 99.8 mile marker of Highway U.S. One on May 28th and in the women’s bathroom at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier.’
Police departments across the country are performing checks in public facilities for these cameras after the various reports. The hooks found were plastic, battery operated, have a MicroSD memory card, and a small hole in the base where the camera is located.
Sheriff Rick Ramsay told the Miami Herald, ‘If you find anything suspicious you think might contain a hidden camera, don’t touch it. Call us right away and we will respond.’ The investigation is currently focused in Miami where several incidents have occurred, but everyone should use caution in public restrooms and report anything suspicious.

TAYLOR SWIFT, KIM KARDASHIAN, DONALD TRUMP & MORE NAKED IN BED

KANYE WEST'S "FAMOUS" VIDEO INCLUDES TAYLOR SWIFT, KIM KARDASHIAN, DONALD TRUMP & MORE NAKED IN BED
Last night, Kanye West released his "Famous" music video Yeezy Season 3 style—fans and close friends of the rapper gathered at The Forum arena in L.A. to watch the highly anticipated premiere, the same way he debuted his latest collection and album. But this time, the outcome was so much more surprising.

The visuals start out with an image of angelic clouds as West rants, giving a nod to Saint Laurent, "We culture, rap is the new rock and roll. We the rock stars. It's been like that for a minute Hedi Slimane!"

A hyper-speed montage follows, including his infamous Taylor Swift interruption at the VMA's, mentions of George Bush and nude bodies lying in sheets.

As the music begins—Rihanna's vocals start out the track—the camera pans over faces of naked people sleeping in a bed together, and it's quite the unexpected orgy: George Bush, Anna Wintour, Donald Trump, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Taylor Swift, West himself, Kim Kardashian, Ray J., Amber Rose, Caitlin Jenner and Bill Cosby.
But why? West is no stranger to controversy, and he's not stopping with "Famous." The figures starring in the video are a reflection of West's work, personal life, and who is currently in the news.

Including Rihanna is a hat tip to their musical collaborations, but adding Chris Brown is a reminder of their tragic abusive relationship. West lies next to his wife, but he also includes their respective exes, Amber Rose and Ray J. Then, there's Jenner, a family member an trailblazing trans icon, and Wintour, to acknowledge West's dive into the fashion world. He also includes news-making figures he's publicly commented on, like Cosby, a suspected rapist, whom he tweeted about earlier this year ("BILL COSBY INNOCENT !!!!!!!!!!") and George Bush, whom West criticized for not caring about black people. And if it wasn't controversial enough, he added Donald Trump in the mix.

Of course, Swift's appearance in the film nude is the most surprising, especially since there was so much back and forth between her and West over whether she approved of the song's lyrics or not. After "Famous" premiered, Swift spoke out against the lyrics' misogynistic message, but West responded saying she approved of the words when they talked on the phone. Kim Kardashian recently added that Swift already knew of the song, saying Swift was "playing victim" in her complaints. But Swift's reps clarified that West never played the song for her to begin with.

West has yet to confirm how much of the video includes those actual celebrities and how much is CGI, but that mystery just adds to the video's genius, if you want to call it that. The visuals took over three months to create and West was making final edits the day of the premiere. The resulting tableau, though shocking, is a parallel to Vincent Desiderio's Sleep. He referenced a work of art while trying to make one of his own.

The Skyslide spans 45 ft from the 70th to the 69th floor of the US Bank Tower in the city.
Despite being made of glass just one inch thick, it is built to withstand hurricane-force winds and earthquakes.
Tickets cost $25 (£18) each. It is part of the Skyspace renovation that also includes an observation deck.

Some visitors got a preview earlier in the week.
"I thought it was nerve-wracking and exciting and daring," said Keri Freeman.
"I went a lot faster than I thought I would," said Rebecca Fitzgerald.
"And you kind of like hit the side as you're coming around the curve, so you're really pressed up against the glass, so you see the whole world below you, but it's not really that scary."
